Anyone can learn to make felt from wool fibres. In this parent and child school holiday workshop, textile artist Helen O’Hara will teach you the art of wet felting. You’ll learn the basic techniques, make a decorated fun, felt mug-rug and then use a resist to create your very own small, felted vessel to take home.

Learn how to make a coiled vessel with Aboriginal weaver and jewellery maker Emma-Jane Hunt. Using wool and raffia you’ll learn this traditional basket weaving technique with a contemporary twist. Suitable for women and girls ages 10+ this is a fantastic workshop to share with family.

Emma-Jane Hunt is a Yindjibarndi and Djaru woman with both traditional and ancestral links to both the Pilbara and Kimberly regions of Western Australia. Taught to weave when living in the East Pilbara by Martu Weavers from the Western Desert 10 years ago, Emma-Jane is passionate about keeping weaving as a cultural practice alive. She also creates handcrafted jewellery using Quondong seeds.

Learn about textile dyeing using food and other natural materials with Deb Wilkes in the school holidays. Kids will experiment with a feast of food and fabrics to make different colours as part of the Food for Thought  project. BYO a preloved, light coloured cotton T-shirt to transform into a new colour.

No nuts will be used but as we will be using food please let us know in the access requirements if there are any allergies so we can avoid problem foods.
If bringing a new shirt please make sure it is washed before hand.

Join Sharyn Egan to create your own fantastic creature using natural fibres and wool. You’ll learn binding and wrapping techniques and discover how Sharyn uses contemporary materials to tell traditional stories whilst you sculpt a local animal significant to Nyoongar people. Suitable for both adults and kids ages 8+ this is a fantastic workshop to share with family.

Sharyn Egan’s arts practice is informed by the experiences of her life as a Nyoongar woman growing up in New Norcia and comments upon the associated trauma, emotions and a deep sense of loss and displacement experienced by Aboriginal people. Sharyn works in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture and woven forms using both contemporary and traditional natural materials.

Build a house out of clay inspired by Michelle Campbell's exhibition Urban with Kaitlyn Elsegood in the July school holidays. Drawing from the houses in Michelle's paintings, their own home, or their imagination, kids will learn ceramic hand building techniques to make a small house in this fun, hands on workshop.

Visit the creative and charming setting of the Mundaring Adult Creative and Learning Centre and wander through as they open their studios to showcase the courses on offer and what participants have been creating during the Food for Thought project.

Come and see the delightful Uthando dolls and upholstery display. There will be a picnic display, featuring works from the quilting, mosaic, and botanical art classes, and a cooking-themed display from the sewing, creative writing, eco-art, and family history groups. The yoga group will share their special Ashram recipes for you to take home.

View recent works created by members of the painting, leadlight, and photography groups. Participate in ceramic, woodwork and wood turning, upholstery, oil painting, yoga and meditation, and eco-art demonstrations.  

Take a break in the Gallery Café or on the veranda, where you can enjoy a delicious Devonshire tea. Pop into the op shop and peruse the wonderful array of preloved goods, vessels, and china. The bookstore will have a terrific range of cookbooks available, and the plant nursery is bound to have some treasures that will lure you back into the garden.

Join West Australian poet and short story writer Josephine Clarke and create your own written work exploring the theme of Food for Thought: What’s for dinner?

With separate workshops for 14-17 and 18-23 year olds, these two part workshops will explore ways of thinking and writing about food and play with ways of putting food onto the page.

18 and 23 year olds will additionally look at the work of other writers and create new work, that will add flavour to how we think about what we eat. Writers will also learn techniques for editing and presenting their work for publication.

Selected pieces will be showcased in an exhibition and a short promotional film celebrating Katharine Susannah Prichard Writer’s Centre, the Shire of Mundaring and Mundaring Arts Centre as a part of the Food for Thought project.

Chung Wah Lion Dance

Witness a performance from the Chung Wah Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe. The lion dance has been part of Chinese culture for thousands of years and is performed on auspicious events including feasts of many kinds.

Part of the Explore and Expose 2020 project

Grab your camera and join artist Duncan Wright for a photography field trip in the Shire of Mundaring. Meet at the Mundaring Weir and learn to photograph the natural and built landscape. No matter the type of camera you’re using, Duncan will show you how to prepare for and capture a great image. He can also help with any technical questions you may have.

This workshop is supported by Shire of Mundaring, the Mundaring Camera Club and NEAMI National. Participants who are residents of Shire of Mundaring or City of Swan are encouraged to enter their photographs taken into the annual Explore and Expose photography competition.
