Voices Photography Competition and Exhibition

Paul Bastian, Digital Voice, 2019

“A language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols by means of which
a social group cooperates.”

American linguists Bernard Bloch and George L. Trager

Building on their community partnership, Mundaring Arts Centre, Mundaring Camera Club and Shire of Mundaring are pleased to present Voices, their 2023 photography competition and exhibition.

Our communities and our environment encompass many social beings, blending and evolving together to create our shared lived experience. Crucial to this cohesion, creatures - including humans - use languages of the body, of voice, and of creative endeavours to express our thoughts, our desires, and to work together to form organisation, cooperation, relationships, and a sustainable future together. This year, Voices welcomes new photographic works that ‘voice’ the function of language as a means to communicate and as an expression of identity, play, imaginative expression, and emotional release.

Our congratulations to the competition winners:

First place, Paul Bastian, Digital Voice, 2019; Second place, Ron Dullard, Harmony, 2019; Third place, Beth Baker, Feathered Feud: A Verbal Spar, 2023; Highly Commended, Laura Martinazzo, War Orphan, 2023
