Itajime and Ori-Nui Shibori with Vicki Ames

Discover the Japanese art of shibori with Traces artist Vicki Ames. Vicki will show you how to prepare and dye samples of cotton fabric using both Itajime and Ori-Nui shibori methods.

Itajime shibori is a shaped-resist technique. Traditionally, the cloth is sandwiched between wooden templates, which are held together very tightly. The templates prevent the dye from fully penetrating the fabric. While, Ori-Nui shibori is when stitches are applied to the cloth, pulled very tight before submerging the cloth into the dye pot. Stitching affords flexibility and control to create designs of great variety. The stitches are removed after dyeing.

Vicki Ames is a West Australian based textile artist and educator with over 30 years experience, having begun her career training at the prestigious Goldsmiths College in London. Her textiles have been exhibited widely across Australia, with many works held both local, national and international collections.
