The Fibrant textile group interpret their love of the environment presenting a range of contemporary two- and three-dimensional textile and mixed media works.

Fibrant is a group of 16 artists working in reused and recycled textiles. Their exhibition Eco Echo celebrates the group’s philosophy of environmental consciousness and sustainability, and coincides with Eco Fashion Week Australia.

The exhibition, curated by Belinda Kay, features diverse artworks displaying a range of techniques such as eco-dyeing, coiling, macramé, felting, knitting and hand-stitching.

The public are welcome to come along to meet the Fibrant artists during casual sessions held in the galleries. These informal talks are a great opportunity for the community to come in to the Centre and learn more about the artworks on display in the Eco Echo exhibition. ARTIST TALKS DATES & TIMES >

‘Gifted’ West Australian artists Sue Cotton and Jane Button share their creations perfect for gifting at Christmas. Working through exhibition, residency and hosting workshops they share their ‘gifts’ with the community.

Leaf Litter – Hidden Habitats at Our Feet

Hundreds of primary school children from across the eastern region immerse themselves in a world of environmental discovery and problem-solving to come up with designs for the 2017 Mundaring Environmental Art Banners to be displayed in the Mundaring town centre.

Artists Denise Brown, Stuart Elliott, Sue Starcken, David Small, Tricia Tarrant, Peter Dailey, Bev Iles and Catherine Swioklo have generously donated these artworks below for a silent auction that will continue throughout About Turn: A Quiet Interrupted Art Life. 

Funds raised through this auction will go towards the presentation of this exhibition, which has happened due to the unfailing support and respect for Peggy Lyon throughout her community.

Celebrating over 35 years of arts practice by dedicated artist, environmentalist, teacher and volunteer Peggy Lyon. Through multifarious techniques and mediums, Peggy has quietly built up a stunning range of works which are predominantly held in private and public Collections.

Leaf Litter – Hidden Habitats at Our Feet

Local primary school students investigate life in the leaf litter to understand food webs and the importance of the small creatures and organisms in ecosystems. 

The students’ artwork is a creative, imaginative response to their research, providing an opportunity to engage with local and global environmental issues and promote a positive message about the importance of nurturing the earth.

The Vahana: Vehicle of the Gods exhibition features the work of celebrated international photographer Clare Arni. Aiyanar is a Hindu village god of Tamil Nadu mostly worshipped as a guardian deity who protects rural villages. The earliest known references are from the 3rd Century CE. Annual festivals are celebrated in sacred groves on the outskirts of villages in early spring at which time the potters, who inherit the role of priest, make large-scale terracotta horses and other votive offerings.

Clare Arni who is based in Bangalore, has been documenting the festivals and processes leading up to them for several years.  She will be presenting an exhibition of new work describing the making of the terracotta horses, the festivals and votive offerings as well as images of the groves where avenues of horses form majestic entries to the spaces. 

One of the remaining potters famous for making terracotta horses will take up residence at MJAC and will create a 3 high terracotta horse for the project.

Renowned WA potter Bernard Kerr will create works in terracotta and undertake a series of community workshops and lessons at Midland Junction Arts Centre.

The horse has played a central role in our culture until very recently. However, writers, musicians, artists and filmmakers continue to celebrate and transform this magnificent creature through their craft, reminding us of the connection and emotional significance of the relationship between humans and horses. Horse Drawn revisits the equine form with Perth artists, Steven Aiton, Daevid Anderson, Daniela Dlugocz, Ross Potter, Angela Stewart, Alastair Taylor and Linda van der Merwe sharing their personal, mythical and historical responses to this impressive creature.

Renowned for their ability to dramatically capture anatomy and movement, invited artists have shared their skills via a series of community workshops, demonstrations and talks at the Midland Junction Arts Centre and local schools since the beginning of the year.

A wild ride with hay, horse hair and horse shoes - community artworks inspired by horses

A community exhibition including a ‘paddock’ of sculptured hay horses; a wall-mounted mob of wild brumbies made from found objects; small sculptures, rosettes and jewellery incorporating horse hair created by school children teenagers and adults. Artworks have been created in a series of workshops led by professional artists for local schools and the general community in the City of Swan and Shire of Mundaring.

Artist in Residence - Marisa Tindall

Through objects and matter that are ground, dissolved and melted, embedded and stitched, Marisa Tindall explores the concept of landscape, in relation to the interconnectedness it has with our existence within the isolation of the Western Australian landscape.

Annika Moses and Shannon Lyons

Young composer and singer Annika Moses and visual artist Shannon Lyons create an installation that explores manipulation and engagement with sound in a tangible way. By responding first to the architectural environment of the MAC gallery space Moses and Lyons produce new site-specific works that straddle the interstice between sculpture and sound.

Since 2005, Mundaring Arts Centre has celebrated the art of children’s book creation through the Act-Belong-Commit heARTlines Children's Literature and Illustration Festival - a month-long festival of workshops, talks and demonstrations, complemented by an outstanding exhibition at Midland Junction Arts Centre of original book illustrations from recently published children’s literature by WA authors and illustrators

Displaying initial sketches, plans and notes alongside finalised artwork and books, the heARTlines exhibition explores the artistic process from idea to final product. Featuring original artwork from award winning artists Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Matt Ottley, Terry Denton, Frané Lessac, Aśka, Gabriel Evans, Chris Nixon, Kylie Howarth, Briony Stewart, Moira Court, Brian Simmonds, James Foley, Jennifer and Alexander Hills.

Artist in Focus - Alastair Taylor

In the course of a not uncommon discombobulation with the dreaded Facebook, Alastair Taylor managed to lose his page and, in the ensuing search, discovered an alarming number of Alastair Taylors all over the world. Creating a matrix of miniature portraits on metal, Alastair weaves together a world map of a multitude of unknown namesakes.

Using needle and thread instead of paint and brush the WA Inspired Art Quilt Group, consisting of eight like-minded award-winning quilters, create contemporary quilts that share kinship with painters as much as they do with traditional hand sewers. Setting themselves themes, the works on display represent quintessential WA conditions – Sand, Scheme, Strata and Salt (series 1) and Primary Industry (series 2).

A celebration of the wildflower stories and landscapes of the Yamaji region in the Midwest of Western Australia, through expressionist styling to convey the traditional cultural stories of the artists.

Dragica Milunovic

Working with a minimalist, process based aesthetic, Dragica Milunovic builds her paintings with many layers of small marks to create a sense of infinity. Utilising the qualities of transparent and reflective materials she creates an environment that is subject to its own optical change.

Shire of Mundaring Retrospective Art Acquisition Exhibition

In celebration of the rich vein of artistic talent within the Mundaring community, the annual Shire of Mundaring Art Acquisition exhibition takes a retrospective look at the life and work of renowned Western Australian artist Ben Joel. Primarily a painter, Ben has a wide range of interests and expertise in traditional and contemporary processes in most media. In this exhibition, along with work spanning some decades there will be a range of never before seen drawings and preparatory work and new high fidelity digital pieces.
