The Language of Colour showcases works inspired by the power of colour to communicate emotions, ideas, and narratives through art. Seventy-eight artists celebrate the richness and diversity of their arts practice, and the cultural expression colours incite.

Slow-making is taking time to notice and to care for people, place and the materials of making. To cultivate is to care for, nurture and encourage the complex relationships between people, plants, animals and the soils that sustain all of us on Earth.

Barbara Gell

Barbara Gell captures feelings and impressions of being in the Perth hills’ Whistlepipe Gully, and a sense of place through her paintings and drawings. Geometric structure forms the scaffolding on which a variety of marks reintroduce the tangle of natural forms. Gell’s work is centred around the push and pull of chaos and order.

Artists Shelley Cowper, Haya Hagit Cohen and Elmari Steyn explore the intricate ties between place, space, feelings and emotions, where the heart and mind work together to construct a spiritual connection to place; communicating this through traditional printmaking techniques and mixed media works.

Shire of Mundaring Acquisition Exhibition

Altered States is a survey of work by seminal artist Stuart Elliott comprised of four distinct yet compellingly connected parts developed through ‘Fakeological’ readings of cultural and historical artefacts and their circumstances. The exhibition showcases over 80 of Elliott’s artworks, including new pieces and significant works loaned from public and private collections.

Photography Competition and Exhibition

In 2022, Cultivate invited entrants to create new photographic works that responded to the notion of cultivation, encompassing ideas, place and flora. 36 photographs were short-listed and are displayed in a public art exhibition at Boya Community Centre.

The Reconnect Photography Project , a partnership project between the Shire of Mundaring, Mundaring Camera Club and Mundaring Arts Centre Inc., is designed to encourage the local community to share their skills and the wonderful place in which they live.

Nalda Searles

A crucial figure in the development of contemporary fibre sculpture in Australia over four decades, Nalda Searles shares her extraordinary approach to craft. Finders Keepers showcases new and past works, demonstrating Searles’ role as the instigator of an innovative art movement utilising Australian plant fibre and found objects.

SHIRE OF MUNDARING OPEN ART ACQUISITION EXHIBITION 

Place and Space showcases the work of 33 local artists as they delve into their material and intangible connections to the Shire of Mundaring as well as broader concepts of place. Notions of community, history, personal memories of the area as well as the local built and natural environment feature strongly throughout the exhibition which explores a wide range of mediums including works on paper, painting, sculpture and textiles.

Spotlight on us is a survey of artworks from the Shire of Mundaring Art Collection acquired from past open invitation exhibitions featuring the work of Hans Arkeveld, Jenny Mills, Susan Tingay, Stuart Elliott, David Gregson, Nigel Hewitt, Mark Alderson, Jon Tarry, David Small, Peggy Lyon, Jennifer Irvine, Kirsten Sivyer, Karin Wallace and Norma MacDonald.

Sue Eva & Kathy Aspinall

Kathy Aspinall repurposed antique and pre-loved items into unique jewellery pieces and artist’s books, while Sue Eva created intimate still lifes that spoke of our shared consideration of love, loss and family to create an inviting installation of works perfect for gifting.

Invited ceramists Sandra Black, Rodney Blumenfeld, Elaine Bradley, Njalikwa Chongwe, Greg Crowe, Stephanie Hammill, Graham Hay, Bernard Kerr, Jenny Kerr, Janet Kovesi Watt, Steven McCoy, Annemieke Mulders, Claire Ng, Warrick Palmateer, Narayani Palmer, Sylvie Riches, Atsuko Sandover, Stewart Scambler, Andrew Tremain, Andrea Vinkovic, Lee Woodcock, and Garry Zeck transformed the gallery space into a feast of surface, texture, pattern and form, showcasing their distinct approaches to clay practice.

Part of the What, a Tool Project

Olga Cironis, Geoffrey Drake-Brockman, Kevin Draper, Stuart Elliott, Sarah Elson, Dawn Gamblen, Phil Gamblen, Peter Hill, Angela McHarrie, Denise Pepper, Monique Tippett and Tony Windberg reflected on the tools they employ in their arts practice and reminded us that, as makers and thinkers, tools are an essential part of an artist’s life. Works presented encapsulated the conventional and the technological to the metaphorical, with a number of artists drawn to concepts of an earlier history and tradition.

Plastic Pollution: Reducing our footprint and caring for our planet

supported by act-belong-commit

820 students from Bakers Hill, Chidlow, Darlington, Helena College, Mount Helena, Treetops Montessori, Parkerville, Pickering Brook, Sawyers Valley, Swan View primary schools, as well as independent participants immersed themselves in research and creative investigation to reduce plastic pollution and produce designs for the town’s 2018 Mundaring Environmental Art banners. 16 designs were selected and students worked with artist Louise Cook to hand paint their work on a large scale.

Stephanie Reisch

Artist in Residence

Stephanie Reisch explored mystical and shamanistic precepts through notions of trace and essence whilst creating works in her residency. Grounded in animal alchemy and prehistoric rituals, her works encompassed experimentation in drawing, painting,

sound and digital media.

Renowned landscape photographer and State Living Treasure, Richard Woldendorp AM, shared his rarely seen early black and white images that launched his long and successful career in photography. Spanning three continents and almost twenty years, the retrospective included his first experimental images from 1956; his early award-winning portraiture from 1961; and photographs for one of his earliest books, ‘Indonesia’, taken in 1971.

Harrison See explored a deeper appreciation for the physical act of painting, enhancing his (and the audience’s) awareness and mindfulness of his movements by painting with weights, to create landscapes that respond to the Mundaring environment.

Jo Darvall presented a suite of paintings and prints reflecting her interest in the work of Kathleen O’Connor; Kathleen’s homecoming to Fremantle from Paris after WWII, the engineering feats of her father, CY O’Connor, and the waterways that define Jo’s adopted state of Western Australia.

Established in 1986, the Shire of Mundaring Art Collection has close to 180 works, with the depiction of the land at the heart of the Collection. Previously acquired works by Sieglinde Battley, Merrick Belyea, Mac Betts, Alex Boddington, Greg Crowe, Rosa Della Torre, Bernard Kerr, David Gregson, Marie Haass, Joan Johnson, Brian McKay, Guy Grey Smith, Michelle Theunissen, Mab Vandeth and Richard Woldendorp echoed the ideas explored by the invited artists in Gallery 1.
