Starting with her mother’s Singer treadle in the South-West, Susie has worked on sewing machines all over the world: in the UK, US, Germany, Holland, Nepal, Tibet, China, India, Turkey, and Mexico.
Some of her work has been in making costumes for theatre, but for the last eighteen years she has been working as a craft consultant with income-generation projects, using local materials and artistic traditions to create saleable products. She has also been the artistic mentor on several art and handicraft projects in India and Mexico. As well as machining, she makes hand-embroidered panels and animations that examine the history and current practice of tailoring, globalisation through outsourcing, and sweatshops.
