Artist Ross Potter recently completed a six week residency at Midland Junction Arts Centre where he created a remarkable life-size drawing exploring proportion and rendering techniques to capture the texture and feel of horses. Whilst creating his stunning portrait of ‘Thunder’ Ross also ran a series of community workshops.Ross is the first artist-in-residence at Midland Junction Arts Centre since MAC took over management this month and he wasted no time taking advantage of the large, light studio space.

In five community workshops held during his residency Ross worked with people of all ages to create new drawn works which will also be on display during HORSE DRAWN. Among those who attended Ross’ workshops were two groups of fantastic Year 9 students from Helena College, a large group of seniors from Swan Community Caring, children attending a school holiday workshop and adults attending an inclusive FUSION workshop for the whole community including people with disability.
Inspired by Ross’ incredibly detailed graphite rendering of ‘Thunder’, participants explored the dimensions of horses and ways to use graphite and erasers to capture light, form and detail.
