PRESENTED BY CATHEDRAL SQUARE
Nine Streams of Boorna Malliji (Tree of Shadow) by internationally acclaimed media artist Sohan Ariel Hayes has been expanded with new images for What on Earth.
The expanded artwork reflects on how settlement has shaped our present; how nature and culture are perceived as things that bend to the will of technology and the forces of capital. The artwork features text and imagery significant to the Whadjuk and non-indigenous histories of the site, as a continually unfolding narrative of reconciliation and resilience, framed by the enduring image of the Borna Malliji (Tree of Shadow) in a constant state of historical flux and transformation.
Each day the artwork generates a unique visual sequence constructed from a curated database of hundreds of fragments arranged across nine streams of classification; pre-settlement, settlement, language, songlines, emblems, marriage, protest, ceremony and future.
