Join internationally renowned costumier, Susie Vickery as she talks about her exhibition Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist, the inspiration behind the project and her broader arts practice.

Susie will present an illustrated lecture at the Mundaring Lesser Hall before inviting guests to wander down the road to Mundaring Arts Centre to explore the exhibition.

For Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist Vickery has worked with a range of collaborators including installation artist Nathan Crotty, natural dye and print artists Holly Story and Penny Jewell, Milliner Susi Rigg as well as Langford Aboriginal Association’s Yarning and Sewing Group. Susie Vickery has worked for over two decades as a costumier for theatre in Australia and the UK. Be inspired by the natural setting of the Mundaring Sculpture Park and transform materials from the earth into your own unique textile fabric in this 2 hour workshop with textile artist Trudi Pollard. Trudi will share her passion for natural dyes, explaining new and innovative techniques developed from ancient cultures whilst guiding you to create a patterned fabric piece using Indigo and natural mordents. Trudi will prepare a natural indigo fermenting vat using fruit and earth minerals in an eco-friendly way then show you how to transform a homespun cotton fat quarter into a special textile using Shibori techniques. After the session you will receive a free copy of Trudi’s Natural Dyeing booklet that includes special recipes to create your own natural dyes.

Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy.

Mundaring will be bursting with a day of action, history and natural wonders when the What On Earth Open Day plants the seed of creativity in the town centre.

Community groups, artists and businesses from across WA have come together to showcase their botanical passion, with a plethora of plant sales, interactive art activities, natural dyeing demonstrations, environmental displays and more.

The Mundaring Arts Centre, Hall, Sculpture Park and surrounds will be ‘blossoming’ with a cross-pollination of hands on activities, food, displays, talks and locally crafted things to buy. Soak up the atmosphere and get your hands dirty!

Help us create a carpet of wildflowers for the What on Earth Open Day.

Transform egg cartons into colourful flowers in this free workshop. The flowers will then be used to brighten the town centre of Mundaring and guide visitors between locations on the What On Earth Open Day on Sunday 29 September.

We are also seeking donations of egg cartons for the project.
Cartons can be delivered to Mundaring Arts Centre 23-31 July. Tue-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat-Sun 11am-3pm.
